Now, for today…
“It has seldom been realized that the listener’s naïve relationship to the storyteller is controlled by his interest in retaining what he is told.” — Walter Benjamin, “The Storyteller”
Let’s first listen to a few things, namely a few minutes of “First Contact” …
and an excerpt from McLuhan’s The Medium Is the Massage:
As we listen, let’s consider Schafer’s terms: keynote, signal, and soundmark. Where are they at play in these recordings? To what effects?
Next, we’ll discuss how to produce a story through only the audiography recordings at your disposal. For instance, how might the audiography samples function as keynotes? As signals? As soundmarks? What would be the differences in terms of delivery and genre?
Then we’ll consider four possible approaches to “Re: Audiography”:
(1) The Keyword,
(2) The Character,
(3) The Event, and
(4) The Place.
Finally, we’ll workshop three elements of your story:
(1) Rhetorical Situation (audience, context, genre, and medium),
(2) The Hook, and
(3) The Warrants.
Time permitting, we’ll begin the “audiovisual litany.”
